Transistor count tells you how much logic the designers could afford. Die size tells you what the chip costs to make, because wafers are priced by area and defect rates scale with it. Density, the two divided, is the clearest measure of what a process node delivered. A card that gained density without gaining area got its performance from the fab rather than the architecture.
